Delhi, Agra & Jaipur - India's Golden Triangle

'Golden triangle' is the name of the popular travel circuit, comprising of Delhi (Capital of India), Agra (Nicknamed as "The Taj City", it houses the Taj Mahal, one of the world's seven wonders.) and Jaipur. (The capital of the state of Rajasthan) International tourists, visiting India, travel to these three cities, for getting an insight into our history (which is diverse, I must add.), witnessing the artistic architecture, and understanding our culture. Let me discuss each one of these three cities with you in detail, and why are they so important to 'Incredible India'.

1. Agra: With its history as old as Mahabharata, the ancient Indian Hindu epic, the Taj City has witnessed the rule of the Lodis, and largely, the Mughals. One cannot talk about Agra without mentioning one of the seven wonders of the world, and perhaps the most visited monument in the world, the Taj Mahal. A white marble mausoleum, it was constructed by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, in the memory of his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Other monuments and historic structures include, the Agra Fort, Fatehpur Sikri, Itimad-Ud-Daulah's Tomb and Akbar's Tomb. So don't cut your trip short after visiting the Taj Mahal, the city has a lot more to offer to you.


2. Jaipur: A city with vibrant history (and the largest city of Rajasthan, may I add!), Jaipur was founded in the year 1727 by Maharaja Jai Singh II, the Rajput ruler, after whom it is named. It was planned as per 'Vaastu Shastra', the Hindu system of architecture. Jaipur is nicknamed "The Pink City" because the city was painted pink during the rule of Sawai Ram Singh, to welcome the Prince of Wales. Even today, a large portions of the city remain pink in colour. Places of interest include Amer Fort (It is actually 11 kilometres from Jaipur.), City Palace, Hawa Mahal, Jantar Mantar, and so on.

3. Delhi: There is evidence of Delhi being continually inhabited since at least the 6th century BC! It is believed to be the site of Indraprastha, the legendary capital of the Pandavas, as per Mahabharata. It has undergone a lot of history, from Maurya rule to the rule of the Mughals. Eventually, the city's modern history witnessed it coming under British rule. Places to visit include Jama Masjid, Red Fort, Chandni Chowk, Qutub Minar, Birla/ Laxminarayan Temple, and in the winters, Mughal Gardens.

And now you know, when you visit India, the golden triangle is the circuit you must not miss!
